The band may have a tongue-in-cheek name, but they made their mark in Nashvillethe old fashioned way, by playing some 200 dates a year for the past few years.Trick Pony-guitarist Keith Burns, bass player Ira Dean and guitarist leadsinger and blues harp player Heidi Newfield-had a simple philosophy whenthey started the band-play live as often as possible and write hardcorecountry songs. That formula made their eponymous debut album a surprise hit,and they didn't change the formula for On a Mission.The album kicks off with the title track, a hard core honky-tonk rocker that'llleave the sawdust on the dance floor smokin'. "Love Is a Ball"(as in ball and chain) is a bluesy love song built around a typical AC/DC chordprogression that perfectly balances cynicism and exuberance, while "I'mNot Thinkin' Straight Anymore" is the kind of drinkin' yourselfto death tune that doesn't get much play in today's post 12-step Nashville,but it's as good as "The Bottle Let Me Down' and "ThereStands the Glass." Newfield's vocal here has a self-destructive cheerfulnessthat harks back to country music's working class heyday.
Sappy ballads are the downfall of many country stars, but Newfield's PGsultriness on "Love Be Still" and "Rain" is naughty enoughto make you sweat, but nice enough for radio play. If most of today's actssound like nags on the way to the glue factory to you, Trick Pony will put somerowdy fun back into your rodeo.
